 The Alarming Facts of Life - 



Individuals with Developmental Disabilities that receive a Special 
Education Diploma will face a very bleak future, because: 

• Of theses students, 93% will be unemployed upon leaving the public
school system and most will remain unemployed for their entire life.
.
• It is almost certain that these individuals will become "Couch Potatoes" 
with no meaningful purpose in life.  They will live on $673.38 per month
(SSI) and rely on food stamps to survive.
.
• The State of Florida has historically ranked 47th nationally in providing 
support services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
.
• Due to a severe lack of adequate funding, there are over 18,000 
individuals who are on a waiting list to receive services.  New applicants
for support services are being told the wait could be 10 to 15 years.
.
• Individuals with developmental disabilities will likely live at home
until their parents are too old to properly care for them, (or the 
parents die).  Only then will the Agency for Persons with Disabilities
place these individuals in a group home or facility (very likely with
people they have never even met)
